Today Jeff was sworn in as a Captain on the Glendale Fire Department. We are so very proud of him. His first day on the new job is tomorrow.

After a year of preperation and several months of intense study Jeff made the captains list today! Actually, he not only made the list but got the second highest score. Congratualtions Jeff, all the hard work paid off!

UPDATE: Jeff was selcted for an open captain postion and will be starting his new role in March!

From July 15th-July 25 HJ and I set out to show some support for his mamas commitment to her MBA program at Notre Dame. Through trains, planes, taxis, and a few good buddies, we were able to spend some time in chicago-southbend/notre dame- back to chicago- milwaukee-back to Chicago, where we escorted KT home. With the superb hospitality shared with us by Brody, as well as the Ott's, and of course KT herself giving up half of her dorm room for a couple of days we were always taken care of. HJ's favorite part had to be cruisin around in Chris ott's wrangler (see video). Hayden was rock star status when it came to putting up with the constant travels, pocket lunches, and naps on trains...which made the trip a great one. Kt left for the program on June 25th. We're glad to have the family back together again. While she was gone, HJ was entertained by Papa, O, Grandma Noni, and Mimi. All that attention eased any anxieties he had about his short time away from his favorite person.

Hayden's cousins came for a sleep over Friday night. The Stengler kids know how to show a little 17 month old how to have a good time! They played inside, outside and even had a spin off in the office chair. I think Luke won, but they all had a great time. Thanks for the visit Stenglers!

Weekend in San Francisco

San Francisco is one of our favorite cities. This past weekend we introduced Hayden to all of our favorite spots in this super cool town. He got a thrill out of walking up and running down all the hills.
While we were there we visited a few friends and managed to eat our way across the city. I can't think of a better place to spend a weekend!

Just two days shy of Hayden's 14 month day he decided to walk! Without much warning he released his nanny's hands and took about 20 steps today. He has been walking around and jabbering ever since. I think he is trying to tell the world to watch out...there is no stopping him now!

We added yet another item to our baby gadget collection this weekend. Hayden got a cool new backpack for what we hope to be frequent weekend hikes! These photo's were taken today on our hike in the Santa Monica Mountains near our home. We went up the mountain hoping to catch a glimpse of a whale but we weren't so lucky today. Maybe we will have more luck next weekend!

Hard to believe a year has gone by already! Hayden turns one tomorrow so we had a party at his great grandparents today to celebrate. As you can see Hayden LOVED his birthday cake. He had so much fun eating the icing that we ended up picking icing out of his nose all day! Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us today and for all those who have helped us celebrate his life over this past year! We are so blessed to have this little guy in our lives.

Hayden loves climbing stairs now, which is scary since we have 3 stories and loads of stairs. We have been teaching him the art of going down the stairs. He seems to know that he shouldn't try it face first, but we still have some work ahead of us! The best part about this new trick is the laughter that accompanies the climb- he laughs all the way up!

The weather has been perfect in Camarillo this weekend so we decided it was time to get the bikes out and take Hayden for a ride. We had a great time on the bikes and playing at the park. Hayden caught the eye of a cute red head at the park. She likesd him so much she couldn't resist the opportunity to throw cheese crackers at him. I think she was taken with his ability to pull himself up on the jungle gym and walk in circles or maybe it was his helmet? At any rate, I don't think Hayden will have a problem with the ladies.

Today Hayden's dad bought him a bike helmet. One day we hope to get Hayden in the bike trailer and ride the boardwalk at the beach or take a ride around the neighborhood. Of course for this to be an option we have to pull our bikes out of the storage in the garage and put the bike trailer together. Jeff says we need the motivation to clean the garage...like someone to buy our house. I say the promise of 70 degree weather should be enough! Nevertheless, once we have the wheels operational Hayden is ready!

Eating cookies just got a little easier for Hayden. Over the past few weeks he has cut two teeth and is having fun using them! If it's not a cookie he is biting into it is one of us....and his bites leave teeth marks now! The pearly whites are looking for company from their cousins up north, they appear to be on their way.

During our annual pilgrimage to Louisiana Hayden got to meet his Great Grandparents (Granny and Grandpa in the photo above) as well as his new cousins Camden (also pictured) and Brody. We had a wonderful time with our Louisiana family. The bowl game was lots of fun and the next day we celebrated the new year with the Waters side of the family at Carrie and Blakes home. It was so nice to hang out with everyone and share good food and fun...just like old times!

In an attempt to update my hairstyle I took a few more steps toward becoming my mother. Lucky for me that is not a bad thing! Jeff took these pictures a few days ago during one of my bonding sessions with Hayden. I was telling him how wonderful and brilliant he is and he responded to all the compliments by sticking his tongue out and giving me a raspberry retort that lasted a good 2 minutes. At least we are communicating!

Last week Hayden and my sister Annie came with me to San Francisco. Annie watched Hayden while I was at work- Thank you Annie! While I missed out on most of the sight seeing, the three of us did get to squeeze in a ride on the Powell street trolley- which is where we were sitting when we took these pictures. Hayden thought it was really neat to be riding in a "car" without a seat belt. He kept looking from Annie to me and flashing this huge "can you believe it" smile. Wonderful memories.

It's been a while since I posted anything on Hayden's blog. My apologies to all those blog addicts out there. I have no excuse but lack of time and energy!
We are in Phoenix today, Hayden is taking a marathon nap and I am attempting to create the perfect Christmas card. I may have to give up and nap myself!
Hayden had his first train ride Thanksgiving day. We went to Jeff's parents home in Oceanside for turkey day. The rail was wonderful and the festivities fun- a good Thanksgiving for the Ragusa clan!

Hayden added another food to his diet this week, apple sauce. It's not the sugary sweet kind, but the organic- no sugar added variety. The kind that makes you pucker when you eat it. That's exactly what he is doing in this picture, puckering those cute little lips!

Hayden is trying very hard to roll over these days...he just can't quite get the hang of it though. Maybe next month! Some recent stats from Haydens last doctor visit: Length 27.5 inches, Weight 20 pounds.
Hayden is above the 97th percentile for all three areas, weight, height and head size. Still on track to be taller than his mama by age 5!

Grandma Sara's 90th Birthday

Last weekend Hayden traveled to Idaho to meet his Great Grandma Sara and celebrate her 90th birthday. Idaho was beautiful and we had a great time visiting with everyone. All the cousins decorated frames for Grandma Sara, Hayden's was complete with Hayden prints. A wonderful visit!

55 years later

I have always admired my grandmother and have shared a very close relationship with her through the years. While I have always wanted to be like her in many ways, I never imagined that my first born would look so much like hers. My parents were visiting my grandmother this weekend in Kilbourne, Louisiana and got this picture from Grandma. I was shocked at the resemblance. It's like Grandma is holding Hayden- 55 years ago. Pretty cool.

Last weekend we visited Jeff at the fire station. Hayden got to sit in the tiller bucket, try his hand at the engineer role (driving), and spent some time with the guys during lunch. Who knows if he will be interested in the fire service as a career...but I have a feeling he will love going to the station as a kid- who wouldn't?

Hayden visited his great grandma and grandpa downstairs today. For those of you who have not met johnny A, he's a very interesting man, full of stories and history. He drove a beer truck for dawson brewery in the late 30's (1937+). He never had a legal license because of his cataracs, but made a living back east delivering kegs and cases in the freezing cold to bars. Hayden found a dawson replica truck and found the time to present it to his great grandpa, making his eyes light up.

Eating dinner is far more enjoyable now that we put the highchair together! Hayden loves to sit at eye level with us and watch us eat while he plays with his toys. Tonight he joined us for dinner and entertained us with his new trick- laughing when folks cough. He started this earlier this week when his aunt Annie coughed and hasn't stopped since. I love it so much my throat is sore from coughing so much!

Yesterday was graduation day for Jeff. It was a big day for Jeff- one we have all looked forward to for many months! To help celebrate we were joined by his parents, sister Angie, niece Hope and nephews Luke and Mark and several folks from the Glendale fire departments, including Jeff's Chiefs and his old roomate Martine and his fiance Katherine.
Jeff made us all proud by giving the class speech- which was filled with wit and wisdom. He had the crowd in stitches as he recounted the interesting way PTI trained the students how to give injections in the rear and how they taught empathy by making the students cross dress for simulations. You may be wondering why they had Jeff give the speech. Who else would they ask but the guy who got the highest score in the class, a 4.0!
Congratulations Jeff- we are all so very proud of you!

Watch out David Beckham, Hayden Ragusa just found his hands and feet and loves to knock the ball around. We had such a great time tonight watching Hayden use his hands and feet to manipulate the ball in the picture. He has finally found his hands and started using them to do all kinds of things- like bite himself, pick his nose and of course pull my hair! What will he do next???

A visit to Gilbert

Last Monday Annie and Justin had us over to their home for dinner. In addition to a yummy dinner we had lots of laughs playing with Hayden and letting him entertain us! Annie had fun playing dress up with Hayden's head...as you can see from the sheets wrapped around it! Little Hayden loved the attention and never complained!
After all the fun playing dress up we thought he needed a little guy time so he spent some QT with his Dad, Justin and "O" on the couch watching baseball. The perfect ending to a perfect day!

Jeff has officially completed Medic School- YEAH! For those of you who may not fully understand the magnitude of this accomplishment let me explain. Medic School was an intensive 6 month program that many people fail out of within the first few weeks and even more as the program progresses. On top of the rigorous study Jeff had a 1 1/2 hour drive to and from class 5 days a week and a pregnant wife at home. To make matters worse Hayden came in the middle of finals! So with a new son, needy wife and rigorous study Jeff still managed to graduate at the top of his class...the very top of his class. I am so proud of him, and so happy it is all over!

Arizona welcomed Hayden with a pizza party Saturday July 7th. The heat must have gotten to Hayden as he decided to nap through about half of his party! Napping aside he still got to spend some quality time stealing hearts of friends and loved ones. It was so nice to see everyone and celebrate our new addition to the family!
The journey to Arizona marked another milestone for Hayden. This was Hayden's longest road trip to date and he did very well. We made it across the desert and back without a hitch...just two very tired parents! I am all for flying next time, 6-7 hours on the road might be ok for Hayden but it was way too hard on his mom, I prefer the plane!
We miss all of our friends in Arizona already and look forward to our next visit. Thank you to all those who came to see Hayden and share a special saturday with us!

Weekend at Granpas and Grandmas

Hayden got to hang out with his grandparents and cousins this weekend in oceanside....with a little detour to La Costa resort. He liked having in depth conversations with the family so much that he set a new Hayden record for continuous sleep.......5 HOURS. Yep, he's on his way to what his parents may think is his greatest accomplishment to date, sleeping through the night. He also got his first exposure to the spa, he seemed pretty mellow with the whole bubbling water thing, he must have had a hard time in his car seat that day and just wanted to relax!

A Shotty Day...

Hayden had his two month appointment yesterday. This was the dreaded inocculation visit- no one was looking forward to it, even Hayden looked somber as we walked into the pediatricians office. All went well though and it was not nearly as bad as I expected. There were a few tears when he felt the first prick but he recovered pretty quickly. In addition to the shots, we got a glowing report from the doc. She gave Hayden an A+ in the growth department. He is 10 weeks old, 25.5 inches and 15 pound and 10 ounces. Growing like a weed! Hopefully this continues and he gets his fathers height and not mine!
Jeff took these pictures after we got home- Hayden normally loves his changing table but he was a little fussy after the shots. He has fully recovered today, enjoying the jumperoo again!

Another good week with Hayden! Every day is a new adventure. The big event this week was a visit from Hayden's grandparents, Mimi and O. Friday night we all went to dinner and Hayden stayed awake the whole time, I think he enjoyed watching everyone eat! He was a source of endless entertainment as he grinned at each of us and never cried once. This kid likes to get out of the house and encourages us to do it often by being such a good boy.
The next adventure will be a trip to oceanside next weekend to visit his Ragusa side of the family. The plan is to go in the spa for the first time...stay tuned for pictures from his first "spa day".

The noise level in the Ragusa household has reached a new high this week. Not from a crying baby but a happy one, Hayden has found his voice and is cooing up a storm! It's loads of fun watching him purse his lips to make these first verbal sounds. Along with the talking came longer periods of sleep. Hayden is sleeping much better during the night- as a result we are feeling a little more human! It's been a great week!

I'm Two...months old

This was an exciting week for the Ragusa family. Hayden turned two months, moved to his own room, had his first shopping spree with his mom and went on a hike in Malibu. How did Hayden hold up to all the change you might ask...like a trooper of course! He slept through the shopping and hike and has more or less slept through the room change. I guess it's hard turning two months!

A room of his own

Hayden spent the past two nights in his own room- yeah! I wish we would have done this a long time ago as we are all sleeping better now. On average he is sleeping one hour longer between feedings. The only downside is that he wakes up at 5:30 in the morning and wants to play for a few hours before taking a long early afternoon nap. This is fine though- gives us a chance to see the sun come up and enjoy some quiet time with him. I have a feeling he will return to sleeping until 7:30 soon...I just have to work on tweaking his schedule a little. All in all I can't complain!

My cousin Carrie and I were very luck to grow up together. We made many a mud pie and dug up our share of worms over the years. Maybe it was all that digging in the dirt that sealed our fate as mothers of sons. Whatever it was, it's such a joy to share this experience with Carrie..now if they would just start looking a little bit like us!

Who knew taking a bath could be so much fun! My mother always says that bath time was her favorite time with us...I now know why- it"s all about smiles and giggles!
Hayden continues to make us fall head over heels for him. If I had a penny for every time Jeff says "I love this kid" I would be a rich woman!

Today we loaded up the car and went to visit Hayden's great grandparents in Fullerton. While it's only about and hour and a half away, it was Hayden's longest car trip in his short 7 week life. He was an excellent traveler as usual and had a great time at his great grandparents house. We loved seeing him with them, they were all smiles and so was he! For those of you who know Johnny A...the fact that Hayden didn't have clothes on was killing him...but he still managed to hold him and eat up every minute of it!
In addition to the great grandparents Hayden also met his Aunt Angie and cousins Mark, Hope and Luke. They were all very good with Hayden. We had a great time watching them interact and seeing Hayden flash them all smiles. I am sure they will all become fast friends!

The boys were reunited yesterday- hooray! Jeff missed his little man and I think Hayden missed his daddy too. We had a great day yesterday, just spending time together and enjoying the luxuries of home...like a changing pad, mobile etc.! Hayden even got to take a bath with Daddy yesterday- sorry no pictures of that...you will have to take my word for it, it was precious!

Island Baby

Hayden returned safely from his trip to the Cayman Islands today. Hayden met his cousin Camden for the first time, neither boy acknowledged the other but their moms enjoyed having them together! The Caymans were beautiful but we are happy to be home, and even happier to see Hayden's Dad!

Hayden is an excellent traveller- he was the perfect companion on the trip to the Caymen's for Annie's wedding. The weather here has been beautiful and we are all looking forward to the big event later today. Hayden hasn't been tp the beach yet...his father banned him to the room. Luckily we have an amazing view from the room!

Hayden celebrated his 1 month day in style at the Ojai Valley Resort in Ojai California. We had a wonderful time at brunch and Hayden and his daddy spent some quality time strolling the golf course and checking out the grounds. The brunch was fabulous- we all left stuffed and looking forward to our next visit to Ojai!
In other news...many miles away a new addition to the Waters clan was born on the 13th, Little Brody Davis. We can't wait to meet both of Hayden's new cousins in Louisiana...the three boys are all a month apart, Camden in March, Hayden in April and Brody in May. They are going to be so cute crawling around together!

The joy's of a mobile

Hayden loves his new mobile and so does his mom! This is by far the best thing in Hayden's room as it allows his mom to check email, put away clothes or any number of things that can be done in 30 minutes or less. A special thanks to John and Jen Fitzgerald for this fabulous gift!

Hayden has been doing lots of growing lately- he had a doctor visit yesterday and measures 21.5 inches and weighed in at 10 pounds 4 ounces- yes, that's right the kid has gained over 2 pounds and grown an inch in his 2 weeks of life. He is now almost ready for his 3 month old clothes, we can barely button the newborn stuff. I guess he is trying to catch up with all his cousins! At this rate it won't take long.

Hayden has learned to sleep during the day, so that he may be awake at night when people are not busy and can give him all of their attention. Katy is learning the art of feeding while having her eyes half closed. Everyone is doing well, and the only one who is not tired is hayden...which is good, because I'm sure he has a long night of crying ahead of him (rest up little boy). He also has learned to hold his 2nd poop until after the new diaper is on (a talent much overlooked nowadays)
